Our Ranch

As a family-owned and operated ranch in southwest Montana, all aspects of ranching and farming done here are done together. Whether it's running tractors, feeding cattle and horses, or harvesting seed, our family works together to make it happen. In addition to raising cattle and caring for horses, we are dedicated to spreading our knowledge of Sainfoin and offering support to farmers and ranchers across the world who are interested in learning more about this wonderful crop and all the benefits it can provide.

The earliest record we have of the Alaska Ranch is documentation of its purchase in 1870 by a man named Elijah Pollinger. One of the most significant pieces of history from his ownership was the operation of a stage stop on the ranch which serviced the stage coach road running from Helena, MT to Salt Lake City, UT. Since then, the Alaska Ranch has changed hands a few different times, our family being the fifth owners. Before our family decided to purchase the ranch, we started with a 60 acre lease from the previous owners and planted it to Sainfoin in 2008. In 2014, we began leasing the entire ranch and started planting all 400 irrigated acres to Sainfoin and immediately launched into the cattle business. After falling in love with the Alaska Ranch, we made the leap and purchased it in 2017. Together as a family, through tons of hard work, we improved all the existing irrigation systems and added completely new systems which included three new pivots. With the purchase of the ranch, we also discovered our affinity toward British White Cattle after witnessing their notably more gentle demeanor when compared to other cattle breeds. Over the years, we have continuously worked everyday to improve our ranch and will continue to do so. Today, the Alaska ranch has five pivots which irrigate 90% of the Sainfoin fields, the other 10% being irrigated by handline, and all the water on the Alaska Ranch is spring fed and gravity pressurized. We currently produce Sainfoin seed, hay, and pellets as well as manage our British White cattle herd and board around 80 head of horses.

Our Family

Shawn Wentzel, his wife Allison, and sons Garrett and Landen moved to Twin Bridges, MT in 2004 and began leasing the Alaska Ranch in 2008. At that time, Shawn and Allison owned and operated Wentzel Apiaries and continued to do so throughout the leasing and purchasing journey of the Alaska Ranch until their son, Garrett, began operating the apiary in 2018. Today, the family lives on or near the ranch and continues to work together through the day to day operations. In addition to helping at the ranch, Garrett now operates Wentzel Apiaries and Landen operates a custom farming and harvesting business. The Wentzel family continues to embody the American family ranch dynamic and plan on making improvements and bettering the Alaska Ranch for generations to come.
